Hundreds of StokeonTrentLive readers have recalled their memories of a Stoke-on-Trent social club after it was targeted by arsonists.
Six fire engines were called to the derelict Suburban Social Club, on Greasley Road, Abbey Hulton, shortly after 6.30pm yesterday (June 27).
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say the fire was believed to be a ‘deliberate ignition’.
Eyewitnesses reported plumes of smoke coming from the building and a photo showed firefighters using an aerial platform at the scene.
The road was also closed as the firefighters tackled the blaze.
Now hundreds of StokeonTrentLive readers have taken to social media with their memories of the club.
This is what they recalled…
Lillian Fisher: “51 years of great times and happy memories spent in the Suburban Club.”
Ryan Chawner: “It’s so sad that some mindless idiots have burnt the place down, I for one had many great memories in there and was in there until the very end.”
Ricky Jones: “Used to go every Saturday night as a kid. It was packed every week. Trips to Blackpool every summer on the coaches, great memories!
“Shame to see it burned down.”
Jane Thompson: “My nan worked here for years, we spent many weekends here. The club trip to Blackpool, what a shame.”
Adam Barclay-Faulkner: “Oh what a shame. We used to do loads of parties with bouncy castles and characters there. Always a fantastic crowd and a wonderful time.
“Such a shame it closed.”
Rachel Shingler: “It’s heartbreaking, I was a member of that club for 20 years. We used to go as kids too, so I’ve been using it for nearly 40 years.”
Lisa Dyche: “Very sad. Spent a lot of my childhood there, many happy memories.”
