‘Don’t understand’ – Aston Villa fans react as contract update emerges on Stoke City loanee

Aston Villa are not going to offer defender James Chester a new contract when his current deal expires this summer, according to reports.

The 31-year-old joined the Potters at the end of the January window, on a loan deal for the rest of the campaign.

Villa boss Dean Smith allowed Chester to make the switch to the Potteries, with the Welsh international keen to play regular football after a series of chronic injury problems.

After playing just two games in the opening months for Villa, Chester has made five appearances – four of those starts – for Stoke.

Chester has impressed his new fans and teammates alike, with Joe Allen tipping him to make Wales’ Euro 2020 squad.

James Chester was under pressure for his place

However, according to a report by Football Insider, that impressive form has not altered his long-term future with Villa, with club bosses reportedly happy to let his contract expire in the summer.

Here’s how Villa fans reacted to that news…

Chris Healy: Probably the dumbest thing that we’ve done….. Him Mings and Konsa would be excellent together and next season I fear Hause and Engels with urrgh James Bree

Conor Buckley: Madness. Easily our 2nd best centre half. He was injured for a while we know that but has a good run at Stoke very best of luck to him just a pity. Surely better option in a back 3 than Hause and at the moment Konsa who will improve. A back 3 of Mings, Chester, Engels.

Christine Glynn: Chester did a lot for us. I just don’t understand with the experience he as a defender

Richard Johnson: James Chester would be starting every game for Villa! For me Second name on the teamlist after Jack

Craig Lorde: Get him back hes better than hause and konza why would you let him go in first place and keep hause? Makes no sense at all to me

Paul Sargent: I’d have him over Konsa & Hause every day of the week!

Lynee Faulkner: Keep him. Why they let him go makes no sense.

John White: Stupid decision to let him go. There was a time when we were going to let Hutton go as well. Imagine if we had…

Charlie Faulkner: Just another decision that makes no sense. Better than any of the other defenders we have.
