First Potteries Buses launches ‘Tap On Tap Off’ ticket tech – and it’s great value


Sometimes getting on board the bus hasn’t always been as straightforward as we would like it to be.

Counting your pennies to make sure you have the exact change, asking the driver which type of ticket you need for your journey, and worrying about overpaying for your fare are all common problems commuters face.

To simplify bus travel in Stoke-on-Trent, First Bus (the largest bus operator in the city) has launched ‘Tap On Tap Off’ – a new way to pay for your bus travel with your contactless credit or debit card, without having to pay for an advanced bus ticket upfront.

The new scheme operates across all of the operators 110 Stoke-on-Trent buses.

Locals are benefiting from having their bus fares capped at the standard £5 day ticket prices when making multiple journeys throughout the day, and also have to pay no more than £2.70 for a single ticket and £18 for a full week of travel.

Tap On Tap Off has also been launched in Leicester, having received positive feedback from both passengers and bus drivers alike. The scheme works by using similar technology as the well-known Oyster brand in London and will be removing barriers in bus travel for customers across the region.

Tap On Tap Off is accessible for all First bus customers aged 18 and over through adult fares.

Nigel Eggleton, Managing Director at First Potteries said: “Ticketing technology is set to take a major step forward with the introduction of the Tap on Tap off function. Simplification of ticketing is a key ingredient in our plan to welcome back existing customers and encourage people who don’t presently choose to use buses to give them a try.

“With the Tap on Tap off function, it couldn’t be easier as a customer can now have the peace of mind knowing that the best value fare will be charged for a single journey or multiple journeys over a full day.”

How does Tap On Tap Off work?



First Bus is the largest bus operator in Stoke-on-Trent

Tap On Tap Off works with any valid credit or debit card, including pre-paid debit cards. It can also be used if you have Google or Apple Pay on your mobile phone or smart device.

All you have to do is tap on when you start your journey and tap off when you leave the bus and the First Bus system will automatically calculate the correct fare for you.

If you have to travel on the bus multiple times a day or per week then you will automatically be charged the best value far without having to purchase the correct ticket in advance.

You don’t have to pay an extra cost to use the scheme, but you do have to be aged 18 and over as the system is currently only providing adult fares for travellers.

Tap On Tap Off offers bus users extra flexibility and the ability to commute between zones 1 and 2 on a First Bus in Stoke without committing to a pre-purchased ticket before they travel.

Tap On Tap Off could also be beneficial to people who don’t use the bus on a regular basis.

For example, passengers who are unsure on whether they will use the local bus to return home after travelling into the city centre don’t have to gamble for a day ticket upfront – bus users only have to pay for however much they travel and thanks to the simplicity of the scheme.

Tap On Tap Off has been launched by First Bus in partnership with local government authorities as part of the national bus strategy.
