High school cancels leavers’ event as Covid cases in town continue to rise

A school has cancelled its leavers’ celebrations amid a Covid-19 outbreak in a North Staffordshire town.

Westwood College, in Leek, has informed students in Year 13 that the event, which was scheduled for June 24, will not go ahead.

It comes as surge testing of around 10,000 people is to take place in the town, after more than 100 cases of Covid were confirmed there.

A social media post by the high school said: “Unfortunately, in the light of an increase in Covid infections locally and the ongoing uncertainty around whether restrictions will be eased after June 21, we have had to cancel the Leavers’ Celebration event scheduled for June 24.

“If we can organise something similar when the situation becomes clearer we will try to do so.”

Next week’s testing roll out in Leek will also see pupils tested in some schools, along with additional checks in Cheddleton.

The measures come as health leaders continue efforts to tackle the outbreak in the area which has seen scores of youngsters self-isolating along with a pop-up vaccination clinic set up at Leek Moorlands Hospital for young people.

Staffordshire County Council confirmed there will be pop-up testing locations across the town along with house-to-house testing of families.

The local authority admits Covid cases have ‘rocketed’ – mostly among school-age children. To date more than 60 of these have been identified as the Delta Variant of Concern, which is believed to be around 40 per cent more transmissible than the previous alpha variant of the virus.

Vaccination appointments at Leek Moorlands Hospital can be booked online by clicking here or by calling 01785 898844.

Anybody aged 25 or over can now book via the national portal by clicking here or by calling 119.
