John Askey’s verdict on Port Vale’s 2-2 draw at Walsall

John Askey said his Port Vale team were well below their best after they dropped out of the play-off places with a 2-2 draw at Walsall.

Vale are down to eighth, outside the top seven on goal difference, after Walsall twice came from behind.

Vale took the lead through Leon Legge on 12 minutes but were pegged back through Elijah Adebayo who scored from the rebound after Scott Brown could only block a shot.

Scott Burgess restored Vale’s lead on 36 minutes with a deflected long-range effort, but Walsall had the better of the game after the break, levelled through Josh Gordon on 58 minutes, and forced a stunning save from Brown to keep out Adebayo.

Vale came back in the final stages and almost won it when Dave Worrall’s volley was saved but Askey said his team couldn’t argue with the result.

He added: “I don’t think we have performed today. There was a spell in the second half where I thought, if we can get a point we are going to do well.

“We just didn’t get to grips with them in the second half although, in the last five or ten minutes, we came back into it a little bit.

“It just shows you don’t have to get too carried away with performances.

“Last week from 1-11 everybody did really well but you couldn’t say that today.”
