Last-minute strike secures back-to-back wins for Port Vale Ladies

Meg Baldwin’s last-minute winner gave Port Vale Ladies a 1-0 victory at Sutton on Sunday.

That clinched back-to-back wins for the Vale who beat the same Sutton Coldfield-based opponents 6-0, in their home fixture 6-0 a fortnight ago, a win that featured a hat-trick from Baldwin.

That was the Vale’s first league win of the campaign, after nine games in the West Midlands Division One North, having started the season impressively with FA Cup victories over Lye Town and Knowle FC.

So, having started to turn around their league campaign, they are keen to continue that momentum away to Shifnal on Sunday.

Manager Ash Thompson said: “It’s been a while coming but I think that first win lifted the confidence and we want to follow that up now.

“Shifnal are up there so it is going to be a tough game. We lost 4-1 at home to them but they scored a couple of late goals while were pushing for an equaliser. Now, after our last two wins, and two clean sheets, we can try to cause an upset.”

Thompson and co-manager Dave Wright took over in the summer with the aim of turning around a team who struggled in the same division last season.

“This season has been a massive learning process.  But the main aim was to improve and we are instilling good habits in games and in training, as well as bedding in a few players. Hopefully we can get a good pre-season and push on next year.”

After travelling to Shifnal on Sunday, Vale Ladies have home games against Solihull on March 22 and Wyrley on March 29. Venue to be confirmed.

Port Vale: Walchester, Williams, Kerfoot, Howard, Brookes, Kendrick, Barrington, Baldwin, Stanley, Glover, Garner.
