Little-known rules could decide Championship relegation between Stoke, Charlton, Huddersfield and Hull

Only three points separate Stoke City , Charlton, Huddersfield and Hull with 10 games remaining of the Championship season.

Wigan and Middlesbrough are caught up in a dog fight too but, in this particular topic, it’s those first four that are interesting.

Stoke have scored 44, Charlton 44, Huddersfield 45 and Hull 48.

Stoke have conceded 54, Charlton 53, Huddersfield 56 and Hull 58.

There is a reasonable chance that at least two of these clubs will end up with the same number of points, same number of goals scored and same number of goals conceded.

If they end up in 21st and 22nd in the table, who goes up and who goes down?

The EFL have planned ahead and the method of determining position is all detailed with a series of criteria, going from points and goal difference to the number of goals scored in away games, the number of yellow and red cards and then, ultimately, a play-off.

Stoke and Charlton, for example, are very close all the way through to number seven in a list of nine, having even scored 20 and 19 away goals respectively.

It is not inconceivable that Stoke could be kept up by virtue of having fewer bookings, with Charlton (83) having had 34 more.

It’s all set out in the league’s rules and regulations section three, part nine.

Here are the rules, in order of precedence, for how clubs will be separated.

  1. Points
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Respective league record against each other: taking into account order of precedence points, goal difference, goals scored
  5. Number of wins
  6. Goals scored in away games
  7. Lowest number of total penalty points
  8. Lowest number of sending off offences which attract 12 penalty points
  9. Play-off

  • Yellow card = Four penalty points
  • Denying the opposing team a goal/obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberate handball = 10 penalty points
  • Denying a goal/obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick = 10 penalty points
  • Serious foul play = 12 penalty points
  • Spitting at an opponent or any other person = 12 penalty points
  • Violent conduct = 12 penalty points
  • Using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures = 12 penalty points
  • Receiving a second caution in the same match = 10 penalty points
