Man jailed after threatening to cough on police officers in Staffordshire

A 42-year-old man has been jailed after threatening to cough over two police officers in Staffordshire after claiming to have symptoms of coronavirus.

Mark Anthony Jones has been sent to prison after pleading guilty to two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker at North Staffordshire Justice Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Jones, from Brace Street in Walsall, was arrested on Sunday after police were called to a domestic incident at an address in Cannock.

He has now been jailed for 12 months, according to a statement released by Staffordshire Police this evening.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said “A second man, a 33-year-old from Burton, has been charged with common assault on an emergency worker following his arrest yesterday morning (Monday 20 April).

“He appeared before magistrates in Newcastle-under-Lyme this morning (Tuesday 21 April) and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at Stafford Crown Court on 22 May.”
