Massive housing estate set to be approved – despite 108 objections



A new 151-home development is set to go ahead – despite more than 100 people lodging objections to the scheme.

Developer David Wilson Homes has applied to build 151 homes on land off Sydney Road in Crewe.

The 4.5 hectare development would consist of two, three, and four bedroom homes as well as one and two bedroom apartments.

There would be 29 affordable homes for rent on the site and 16 shared ownership.

The site has been earmarked in Cheshire East Council’s development blueprint as being able to accommodate around 150 new homes.

A design statement lodged to the council reads: “The proposed development of new homes will make an important contribution to meeting housing need in the local area, including the provision of much needed affordable homes and apartments.

“This will be a high quality development that respects the local character and capitalises on the site’s gateway location through the delivery of bespoke landmark buildings.”

Cheshire East Council says it has had 108 objections from local families as well as opposition from local town and parish councils.

Councillor Hazel Faddes, who represents Crewe East, said: “This planning application has brought forward a lot of strong opinions from nearby residents who realise the daily issues of noise and speeding traffic around Crewe Green roundabout and its surrounding highways.

“Speeding traffic, and a large number of vehicles make this area quite dangerous. Having a GP surgery, school and shopping facilities within walking distance is of little use if you are worried about walking there safely.”

Haslington Parish Council was concerned part of the site would be in the strategic green gap, a patch of land splitting the village from Crewe.

Cheshire East planners look set to approve the application at next week’s strategic planning board meeting.

A council report states: “The principle of residential development on the site has been established through its allocation within the Cheshire East Local Plan Strategy.

“Although the north western corner of the site will be located within the Strategic Green Gap, this will only accommodate public open space and consequently maintain its openness.”
