The Republic of Ireland international was sidelined with a knee injury when the Championship season was suspended because of the coronavirus crisis.
He had not played for the Potter since February 12.
But O’Neill has revealed he is making good progress in his recovery.
“The positive aspect from our point is that when we resume we’ll only have two longer-term injuries in Joe Allen and Thibaud Verlinden. We wouldn’t anticipate that they would be back by the time we start playing again,” he told the club.
“The other injuries, people like James McClean and one or two players on the periphery of things who have had one or two niggles, they should all be fine for when we resume training and playing.
“The difficult thing will be how we manage them back into training.
“That’s why it’s important that they stay in as good a condition as possible so when we come back in we can train them at the level that we’d like to, so we’re not getting scenarios where players are overloaded and breaking down.”
