North Staffordshire driver told police he didn’t need insurance because he was a ‘Freeman of the Land’

A North Staffordshire van driver told police officers he didn’t need insurance because he was a ‘Freeman of the Land’.

After being stopped on the A525 towards Madeley Heath this afternoon the motorist tried the unusual excuse on the Staffordshire Police Road Policing Unit.

Under the Freeman of the Land movement people believe they only need to follow statutory laws if they consent to them. In England the movement dates back to 2011.

Unfortunately for the driver, the specialist traffic police disagreed with his claim he didn’t need insurance and his van was seized.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Owner of this vehicle was claiming the Freedom of the Land and the right to a conveyance.

“Therefore didn’t require Insurance for it. And he didn’t believe in the acts that cover traffic rules.

“No explaining from us will change his mind. Still gets reported and the van seized.”
