A patient has died in hospital after contracting coronavirus.
The man – who has not been named – lost his fight for life at Crewe‘s Leighton Hospital yesterday.
NHS officials say the man had ‘underlying health conditions’.
The announcement has been made by Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Leighton, this afternoon.
Chief Executive James Sumner said: “Sadly, we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at Leighton Hospital, and had tested positive for COVID-19, has died.
“The patient, who died yesterday, was in his 60s and had underlying health conditions.
“His family has been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”
The trust, the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England and NHS Improvement will not be issuing any further statements following the tragedy.
The current UK coronavirus death toll has now risen to 35.
