Pottery giant Wedgwood is to feature on primetime TV tonight as part of a series featuring former Tory MP Michael Portillo.
Great British Railway Journeys – a long-running documentary now in its tenth series – is fronted by Portillo which tonight sees him travelling from Birmingham to the Potteries.
Armed with his Bradshaw’s guide, Portillo – now a journalist and broadcaster – travels to Wedgwood which was visited by King George V and Queen Mary in 1913.
During tonight’s show, he hears how the royal couple used their visit to forge links with working people which strengthened the monarchy.
And, on a touring of the factory, Michael admires the decoration of the ceramic painters and even tries his hand at clay spinning.
The programme is due to screen on BBC2 at 6.30pm.
