Powell, Allen, Fletcher, Fox – Stoke City injury news ahead of Derby County

Michael O’Neill is weighing up his options at right wing-back – or a change in system – as Stoke City make the trip to Derby without Tommy Smith.

Stoke have failed with an appeal against Smith’s mid-week red card, and he will miss the next three matches following a strong start to the season.

O’Neill could hand a debut to Demeaco Duhaney or use former Derby winger Tom Ince in the wing-back role while Alfie Doughty has played there for spells this season.

Stoke could also be tempted to change formation, with a move from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3 the most likely if O’Neill was to go down that route.

Joe Allen (toe) is a doubt, but Nick Powell is available for the first time since an away win at Swansea City last month. Steven Fletcher (ankle) and Morgan Fox (hamstring) remain in the treatment room.

O’Neill said: “We brought young Demeaco Duhaney in at the end of pre-season, and he is a good fit for there. He’s still probably getting up to speed a little bit.

“We’ve played Tom Ince there in the cup games as well. I would say it’s still a little bit of a new position for Tom, but he’s got the quality and experience to play there.

“There are one or two other things we can look at, and we can change the shape of the team as well. There are a number of options we have.

“In terms of the injuries, Morgan Fox and Steven Fletcher are still not available.

“We have a doubt about Joe as well, who came off with a toe injury. We’ll see how he is. We’ll give him another 24 hours.

“We’ll have Nick Powell coming back and being available, which is a big plus.”
