‘Scaremongering’ – Why Stoke City fans are not worried about stark cash prediction

Stoke City fans are not worried by a table that graphically illustrates the club’s huge outgoings in Championship terms.

Last week the EFL announced a £50m package – divided between owed money and a loan pot – to help its clubs weather the storm provoked by the coronavirus crisis.

But finance expert Kieran Magiure warns the money will last Stoke – a club underpinned by the Coates family via their bet365 empire – as little as nine days because of its current expenditure.

“Based on their most recent wage levels,” says Maguire, “this is how long it will take (in days) for Championship clubs to consume the advances and grants given by the EFL, and that’s ignoring other costs incurred by clubs.”

Here’s his table…

HOW LONG EFL HANDOUT IS ESTIMATED TO LAST CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS

9 days: STOKE CITY

9.3: Fulham

10: Swansea City

10.4: Cardiff City

10.8: Derby County

11.9: Sheffield Wednesday

12.6: Middlesbrough

13.9: Nottingham Forest

14.3: Reading

15.4: Birmingham City

16.1: Leeds United

16.5: Bristol City

17.8: Huddersfield Town

20.4: Hull City

21.1: QPR

22: Blackburn Rovers

25.6 Preston

29.4: Brentford

29.9: Millwall

30.4: Wigan Athletic

35.8: Charlton Athletic

47.7: Barnsley

Here’s what fans have been saying about it…

Mark Hammond:  Nope, Coates will look after us. Scare mongering as per usual.

Roy Millward: My god there are certainly more important things than football at the moment.

Mark Barnsley:  Not the biggest worry at moment is it.

Mick Johnson:  Don’t want to see any more so called supporters slagging of the Coates family again.

1972stokie: Perhaps the powers that be need to relax the FFP rules for now and allow normal wages paid, during the crisis, to not be added to the FFP rules.
