It has become an unfathomable trend to most people, seeing footballers and coaches cover their mouths when talking as if they are always being watched by expert lip readers.
But Badou Ndiaye took secrecy to a new level as his title-chasing loan side Trabzonspor took on Gaziantep on Saturday.
He received a piece of paper with, presumably, tactical instructions from manager Huseyin Cimsir during the second half.
The 29-year-old casually played a couple of quick passes before getting a chance to read the note – and then ate it rather than chucking it on the ground to give the game away.
The footage was posted online by beIN Sports and went viral across Turkey, watched by more than 1.5m.
Trabzonspor couldn’t find a late winner and drew 1-1 with Gaziantep, dropping two valuable points as they try to secure the championship for the first time in 36 yeares.
They sit second behind Istanbul Basaksehir, who won 3-0 over Goztepe to move three points clear.
Ndiaye is on loan in Turkey from Stoke City until the end of the season – and the deal includes a purchase option to make the switch permanent.
He had set Galatasaray on course to win the title in 2017/18 before joining Stoke for £14m. He returned on loan to help his old side retain the crown last season and spent half-a-season at Stoke this term before joining Trabzonspor in January.
