Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has explained the incredible £10m donation to staff and patients at Royal Stoke and County Hospital – from the Denise Coates Foundation – to aid their efforts during the coronavirus crisis.
“The National Health Service has always been very special to this country,” said Coates, talking to talkSPORT.
“They’ve never been called upon as they have at this moment, and they’ve risen to it magnificently.
“I don’t want to use a war analogy, but it is like being on the front line as their lives are at risk. Their response has been just outstanding.
“Denise (Coates) wanted to do something, and John (Coates) and myself also, and we’ve made this contribution. We wanted to play our part and show we were fully supportive.
“We wanted to do something tangible to show our support and commitment, and we felt this was a way of doing it. And we are pleased to be able to do it.”
