Stoke City ‘express interest’ as defender heads for Aston Villa exit

Aston Villa defender Neil Taylor is wanted by two Championship clubs and two in Turkey, according to reports.

The left-back is out of contract at the end of the current season, and The Sun is claiming he already has plenty of suitors should he move on.

They credit Stoke City and Queen’s Park Rangers with an interest and also reckon both Istanbul Basaksehir and Trabzonspor are keen on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old has played just one Premier League game for Villa this season – and only 14 last season as Matt Targett has come to monopolise his role in Dean Smith’s defence.

He has been at Villa for the last four years and has made 103 appearances.

He arrived at Villa from Swansea where he spent seven years and earned most of his 43 caps for Wales.

Meanwhile Liam Lindsay rounded off his loan spell at Preston North End with a winning goal against Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Lindsay, who hasn’t played for the Potters since January 2020, joined their Championship counterparts on loan in February.

The left-sided centre-back was signed a replacement for Ben Davies, who sealed a surprise move to Liverpool during the window transfer window following a defensive injury crisis at Anfield.

Lindsay made 13 appearances for North End, scoring twice, in a spell which saw manager Alex Neil sacked in March after a run of one win in nine games.

With his prospects at the bet365 Stadium looking bleak under Michael O’Neill, Lindsay could depart on a permanent basis this summer, possibly for Preston.

But much will depend on the identity of Preston’s new manager, with Frank McAvoy taking over from Neil on an interim basis until the end of the season.
