Stoke City fans debate goalkeeper situation as Michael O’Neill assesses options

Manager Michael O’Neill has said he will use Stoke City’s remaining games this season to assess goalkeepers Adam Davies and Angus Gunn.

Davies played in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Preston North End while Gunn, who is on loan from Southampton, was picked for Tuesday’s 3-2 home defeat to Coventry City.

“We want to give them both game time as much as possible between now and the end of the season,” said O’Neill after the game.

“Adam was excellent in the game on Saturday. I don’t think Angus was at his best [against Coventry].

“Between now and the end of the season, we’ve got to look at the goalkeeping situation, as we do at all areas of the pitch.”

O’Neill will also be keeping tabs on youngster Josef Bursik, who out on loan at League One promotion chasers Peterborough United.

Here’s what Potters fans have been saying about the goalkeeping situation on our Stoke City – The Sentinel Facebook page.

Andrew Howe: Davies and Bursik are ours, Gunn a loanee. Appreciate that MON wants Joe to have game time on loan but I think he could be our number 1 next season. I’d return Gunn to Southampton.

Nick Maskrey: Gunn should be no where near it, send him back and use the two much much better keepers we have!

Mike Robinson: Davies is my No.1. Joe is still learning his trade and is suspect in getting down to low shots in the corner. Another one this week for Peterborough, but a very good prospect.

Kieron Mckinney: Davies should be number 1 but I like see bursik given a chance next season too.

Barry Sherratt: Davies or Bursik..send gunn back.

Keri Green: Send him [Gunn] back, Davies and bursik should be our keepers. Gunn flaps far too much

David Baker: Davies should be first choice.

Rich Knowles: Davies errors that lead to goals are a lot rarer. Birmingham the only obvious one I can think of this season. Before that, Brentford in the cup on his Stoke debut in January 2020. Admittedly, I may have forgotten others, but I’m happy to be corrected.

Phil Tomlinson: This really baffles me; we have two quality keepers that we own and instead we play the loanee.
