Stokies celebrating en masse after virtual Grand National – and here’s why

You can bet the good old people of Stoke-on-Trent have had a higher winning rate than anywhere else in the country on the virtual Grand National today.

No need to study the Racing Post this morning, no need to look at weights or form or even to look for your favourite jockey or colour.

There was one horse that stood out in the 40 runners for this afternoon’s surreal digitised meeting at Aintree: Potters Corner.

It is a horse that sounds like it could be a pub in one of the Six Towns side streets and it came in first at 18/1, beating second-placed Walk In The Mill (sorry good people of Manchester) and Any Second Now, which came third.

A second piece of good news is that profits from bookmakers – including Etruria-based bet365 – will all go to NHS Charities Together.

The real Potters Corner is trained in Wales by Christian Williams and won the real Welsh Grand National in December under real teenage jockey Jack Tudor.

It’s owned by All Stars Sports Racing and Jonathan Davies, the Wales rugby star.

The virtual race used the most likely line-up for what should have been the world famous meet in Liverpool a 5pm and used CGI technology and complicated algorithms for a simulation screened on ITV.

Tiger Roll had been preparing to attempt an unprecedented third consecutive win before the Grand National was called off back on March 16.

The BBC’s racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght said: “As previous virtual Grand Nationals have proved fairly accurate in terms of the actual result – and there’s no reason to believe that wouldn’t have been repeated – what a story Potters Corner might have been in the real thing.

“In 2019 the first Welsh-trained winner of Wales’ Grand National in over half a century might have turned into the first Aintree success for Wales in over 100 years.

“How ironic though, that Jack Tudor wouldn’t necessarily have qualified to ride because of inexperience. Tiger Roll was anchored by the weight. An 18-1 winner means a decent amount for the NHS.”

All we need now is for a horse called Saggar Makers Bottom Knocker to line up Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
