‘The challenge’ – Michael O’Neill on his relationship with Stoke City supporters

Michael O’Neill says Stoke City fans know more than him… about the club.

The Stoke boss says he happily defers to their greater knowledge when it comes to the history and tradition of their club.

And O’Neill says he is always taking a temperature of supporter feeling – and why they might be upset – because his task is to keep them happy.

“I’m here 22 games, but supporters have been watching Stoke City for a lifetime, so they know a lot more about Stoke City than I do,” said O’Neill as he reflected on the recent  Fan Forum at the bet365 Stadium.

“And I don’t profess to be anywhere near as knowledgeable as they are in that scenario.

“Also, it’s important to understand the frustrations of supporters as well because as a coach the objective is that your team keeps your fans happy.

“That’s not always the case, of course, and that’s the challenge for a coach.

“I took a lot from the (Forum) evening because I think it’s important to speak openly and honestly with supporters, which hopefully they felt I was, and they get an understanding of where I see the club can go.

“And obviously, that is both in the immediate future and the longer-term future.”
