The Plume of Feathers is a canal-side pub on Station Road in Barlaston, between Stoke-on-Trent and Stone. It became widely known during actor Neil Morrissey’s decade-long involvement, but the business entered a new chapter in 2025 with a new management partner and a refurbishment backed by Punch Pubs.

This independent guide explains the change, what the pub currently offers and what to check before booking. Menus, prices and opening times can change, so use the pub’s official website for the latest information rather than relying on an older review.

The change after Neil Morrissey

Neil Morrissey and his business partners operated the Plume of Feathers for around ten years. Their company decided not to renew its lease in 2025, ending the period in which the pub was routinely described as “Neil Morrissey’s pub”.

That did not mean the pub disappeared. Punch Pubs subsequently announced that management partner Amie had taken over in April 2025. Later that year, the premises closed briefly for a refresh before reopening with an updated appearance and a renewed focus on being a village pub and dining destination.

The distinction matters because old articles, menus and social posts may still refer to the former operating company. Visitors should judge the present business on its current team, menu and service rather than assuming it is unchanged from the celebrity-associated era.

Food and dining

The current official website describes a menu based around familiar pub classics alongside chef’s specials. Separate listings are provided for the main menu, lunch, Sunday dining, desserts and breakfast. The pub also has a dedicated dining area for customers who want a more restaurant-style meal.

Menus are seasonal and individual dishes can be withdrawn, so it would be misleading to promise a particular pie, roast or vegetarian dish without checking first. Anyone with an allergy or intolerance should speak directly to staff before ordering; an online menu is not a substitute for current allergen advice from the kitchen.

Sunday lunch and special occasions can be busy. Booking ahead is sensible for larger groups, while quieter midweek visits may suit customers who prefer a less crowded setting.

Drinks and the bar

The pub advertises a broad bar range including cask and craft beer, wine, cocktails, spirits, soft drinks and alcohol-free choices. Availability varies, particularly for rotating cask ales. If a specific drink is important to your visit, telephone first rather than assuming it will be on the bar.

The bar and dining areas serve slightly different purposes. People calling in for a drink, walkers and customers with dogs may prefer the more informal bar area, while the separate dining space is intended for a longer meal. Confirm the current dog policy when booking a table because permitted areas can change.

Canal-side location

The Plume sits near the Trent and Mersey Canal and overlooks the village bowling green, giving it a setting that feels removed from the busier roads nearby. It can be incorporated into a Barlaston walk, although towpath surfaces may become muddy or slippery after rain.

Nearby World of Wedgwood provides another reason to visit the area. Combining the two can make a fuller day out, but check the opening arrangements for each place independently and never assume that one venue’s car park can be used while visiting another.

Families, dogs and accessibility

The pub positions itself as a relaxed local venue suitable for meals and family gatherings. Families should check children’s menu availability and serving times when booking, particularly for breakfast or later evening visits.

Third-party booking information currently describes wheelchair access and a dog-friendly bar area, but individual needs differ. Customers who require step-free access, an accessible toilet, space for a wheelchair or assistance dog arrangements should contact the pub directly before travelling.

Opening hours and booking

The official website currently lists the premises as open from 9am, with later closing on Friday and Saturday. Kitchen and breakfast serving times may be shorter than the building’s opening hours. Check the booking page or call the pub on 01782 529073 for the time you intend to visit.

The address is The Plume of Feathers, Station Road, Barlaston, Staffordshire, ST12 9DH. Drivers should confirm parking arrangements and avoid leaving valuables visible. Public-transport timetables should also be checked on the day, especially for an evening return journey.

Before you go

  • Book ahead for Sunday lunch, celebrations and larger groups.
  • Check current food-serving times as they may differ from bar hours.
  • Tell the pub about allergies and access requirements before arrival.
  • Confirm the dog policy and permitted seating area.
  • Use the current official menu rather than photographs of an older one.
  • Arrange a safe journey home if drinking alcohol.
