Tributes paid after death of North Staffordshire mayoress

Tributes have been paid following the death of Newcastle mayoress Angela Cooper.

Angela, wife of Councillor John Cooper, the mayor of Newcastle, died on Monday.

Newcastle Borough Council is flying the borough flag at half-mast as a mark of respect.

A council spokesman said: “The mayoress of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Angela Cooper, has passed away.

“Angela supported her husband, Councillor John Cooper, as mayoress during two terms in the mayoral office, 2008-2009 and 2020-2021.

“She will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with the mayor and the rest of the family.”

Mike Stubbs, leader of the Labour group on the borough council, tweeted a tribute to Angela.

The New Vic Theatre also paid tribute to the mayoress on social media: “Our thoughts are with John and his family at this sad time. We often welcomed them both to the theatre over the years and it was a pleasure to know Angela. Sending love and condolences from everyone at the New Vic.”
