Two key batsman in Longton side for NSSCL Premier Division clash with Leek

Longton will hand a debut to Pakistan batsman Saad Ali in tomorrow’s NSSCL Premier Division home game against Leek.

Ali was forced to miss last weekend’s narrow victory at Cheadle because he was quarantining as part of coronavirus guidelines.

He was part of the Pakistan Test squad which toured England in 2018, but didn’t feature in the five-day games, instead being limited to warm-up matches.

Ali represents Sindh in Pakistan’s first-class game and has also picked up honours at under-19 level on the international stage. He was part of Pakistan’s team which contested the 2012 Under-19 World Cup.

Ali boasts an impressive record in the pro game in his homeland.

The Karachi-born player has scored 25 half-centuries and 11 tons in 74 first-class matches, averaging more than 44. He has a top score of 232.

His excellent form in the 2017/18 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, where he racked up 957 runs, earned him selection for Pakistan’s Test squad. And although he didn’t play, he went on to feature in a couple of one-dayers against Australia in 2019.

Ali has previous experience of playing club cricket in England. In 2016 he spent a season with Cumbria side Kendal, where he accumulated 754 runs and chipped in with 29 wickets.

He has also been in good nick in Pakistan cricket this year. Back in January he chalked up a couple of half-centuries in one-day domestic matches, including an unbeaten 78 which enabled Sindh to knock off an imposing 349-run target set by Southern Punjab.

Sub pro Ashar Zaidi, who made a key half-century and took three wickets last Saturday, steps down, while influential batsman Dave Wheeldon is in the Longton side for his first appearance of the campaign.

Leek head to Ripon Road on the back of victory over Bagnall Norton last weekend.

Whitmore stick with their sub pro Graeme White for the home encounter against Stone SP.

White produced a star turn last weekend with 80 and two wickets in Whitmore’s success at Meakins.

Moddershall & Oulton are also on the sub pro trail once more with Sri Lankan Sachithra Serasinghe filling the void until permanent signing Rizwan Hussain becomes available.

Serasinghe scored an unbeaten 98 last Saturday to help the Modd men defeat champions Porthill Park. They head to Checkley tomorrow.

Ashcombe Park play host to Burslem with both sides looking to bounce back from defeats at the hands of Stone SP and Checkley respectively.

In the division’s other matches, Porthill Park host Cheadle, while Meakins head to Bagnall Norton.
