Vicar cleared of sex offences against two girls

A vicar has been cleared of child sex offences.

Veronica Green, aged 58, was accused of six offences said to have been committed when she was a teenager growing up in North Staffordshire.

A jury found Mrs Green, of Marbury, not guilty of five counts of indecency with a child and a further charge of indecent assault following a trial at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

She broke down in tears as the verdicts were announced in court. Speaking afterwards she declined to make a statement to StokeonTrentLive, but said: “As a family we just want to get on with our lives.”

Mrs Green, the reverend for Marbury, Tushingham and Whitewell in Cheshire, was suspended by the Diocese of Chester in January 2020 after a complaint was made to police.

Two women alleged they had been abused by Ms Green as children, more than 40 years ago.

During the trial, Mrs Green admitted she had exposed her naked body to one of the girls on one occasion but denied any sexual conduct towards them. Ms Green was 13 at the time.

The Diocese of Chester released a statement following the verdict, saying it takes the safety and wellbeing of children and young people very seriously and that Mrs Green would remain suspended while ‘safeguarding and disciplinary procedures’ were followed.

Lead Bishop for Safeguarding, Julie Conalty, said: “Following Mrs Green’s acquittal, a formal church process now needs to take place to assess the situation within the context of its national safeguarding and disciplinary procedures.

“Mrs Green will remain suspended during this time. Please continue to pray for everyone affected by this situation.”
