Warning to ‘act now or lose your right to vote’

People are being warned to take action to ensure they do not miss their chance to vote in the upcoming local elections.

Staffordshire residents will go to the polls on May 6 – and you must register to vote by midnight on Monday (April 19).

Every seat on Staffordshire County Council will be up for grabs and, following its postponement last year, there will also be an election to pick the next Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire. A number of other polls will also be taking place in different parts of the area.

Nationally, 17 per cent of the electorate – nine million people –have not yet registered correctly or are living at the wrong address. If they turn up at polling stations without registering they will not be allowed to vote.

There will be 145 local council elections and 13 mayoral votes across the country on May 6.

Craig Westwood, the Electoral Commission’s director of policy, said: “It only takes five minutes – the time it takes to boil a kettle,” reports The Mirror.

In England, you can register to vote through the government website here. You will need your National Insurance number, name and address details.
