Westport Lake offers one of Stoke-on-Trent’s easiest waterside walks. Set beside the Trent and Mersey Canal between Longport and Tunstall, it combines two lakes, a nature reserve, level paths, a children’s play area and a visitor centre with wide views across the water.
It is the city’s largest expanse of water and works equally well for a short family outing, a steady walk, birdwatching or a quiet coffee overlooking the lake. Entry to the site is free, although parking, food, activities or other services may carry charges.
The main circular walk
The best-known route is the level path around the main lake, measuring approximately one mile. For most visitors it is a manageable walk rather than a demanding hike. The route is popular with families, wheelchair and mobility-scooter users, people with pushchairs, runners and dog walkers.
Conditions can still vary after heavy rain, frost or maintenance work. Anyone making a special accessibility journey should check locally before setting out. Give other users room on narrower sections and keep children close to the water’s edge.
Wildlife through the seasons
Westport Lake is particularly important for water birds. Resident species are joined by winter visitors and birds stopping during migration, so the wildlife changes throughout the year. Swans, ducks, geese and herons are among the more visible residents, while patient visitors may also see kingfishers, dragonflies and smaller birds around the conservation area.
Early mornings and quieter weekdays can be rewarding for birdwatching. Bring binoculars if you have them, move slowly and avoid crowding wildlife for a photograph. Birds should not be fed bread because it provides poor nutrition and can pollute the water. Follow any feeding guidance displayed at the site.
Walking with children
The short circuit and play area make Westport Lake a practical introduction to nature for younger children. Turn the walk into a simple spotting challenge: count different birds, look for changing leaf colours or listen for birdsong. This gives children a purpose without disturbing the animals.
The lakes are open water and are not swimming areas. Children need close supervision, particularly near banks and viewing points. Ice should never be treated as safe during cold weather.
Dogs at Westport Lake
The site is popular with dog walkers, but wildlife and other visitors must come first. Keep dogs under close control, use a lead when birds are nesting or gathering near the path, and prevent them entering conservation areas. Bag dog waste and take it to a suitable bin.
A friendly dog can still frighten children, disturb birds or unsettle another dog. Using a lead on busy days is often the simplest way to keep the walk enjoyable for everybody.
The visitor centre and Westport Lake View Café
The visitor centre stands at the southern end of the lake and offers panoramic views from inside and from its lakeside balcony. Staffordshire Wildlife Trust operated the café for many years but left the site in September 2024. The council announced that Westport Lake View Café reopened under a new independent tenant in April 2025.
The café offers a convenient stop before or after a walk, but opening times and menus can change. The current official visitor listing shows the centre open daily from 10am to 4pm during 2026, while the café may advertise different serving hours. Check the latest information before making a journey specifically for food or indoor facilities.
The canal and longer routes
The Trent and Mersey Canal runs beside Westport Lake, allowing a short lake circuit to be extended into a longer waterside walk. The towpath gives the visit an industrial-heritage dimension, linking the landscape with the canals that once served the Potteries.
Longer walks require more planning than the main circuit. Towpath surfaces, lighting and access points can vary, so wear suitable footwear and turn back before daylight fades. Cyclists should slow down and give clear warning when passing pedestrians.
Getting there
The main visitor address is Westport Lake Road, Stoke-on-Trent, ST6 4RZ. The car park is approached from Westport Lake Road, with access from the A500 via the Longport and Tunstall junction. The site can also be reached from the Westport Greenway and the Trent and Mersey Canal.
Parking arrangements and public-transport services can change, so check current signs and journey planners on the day. Do not leave valuables visible in a parked vehicle.
